ZNUC OFFICERS RECEIVES COMMENDATION FROM NBI DIRECTOR WYCOCO
 

Two high ranking officers of the Zamboanga del Norte United Correspondents (ZNUC) recently received commendation from the director of the National Bureau of Investigation of the Philippines for their relentless investigative reporting of the illegal logging operation of the last virgin forest of the province of Zamboanga del Norte.

Last Sunday, during the regular meeting of the REACT Space Group of Dipolog, Atty. Oscar Tomarong handed the certificate of commendation from NBI Director General Reynaldo Wycoco to ZNUC Vice-president Celestine “Nick” Carbonel and ZNUC Chairman of the Board Leo Cimafranca.

Aside from the Carbonel and Cimafranca, a number of members of the REACT Space Group of Dipolog and REACT Karagatan of the municipality of Labason also received the same commendation from the NBI Director General.

The REACT members who received the commendations were Reactors Engr. Rolando Soliva, Nicanor Nacaytuna, Michael Malacca, Ramon “Ike” Gamalinda, George Realiza and Dennis Saile who were all very active in their effort to support the NBI investigation of the alleged illegal logging activity happening in the towns of Baliguian, Siocon and Sirawai.

On the other hand, two other Reactors of the REACT Karagatan Group of Labason namely Alberto Enero and Dario Maratas also received the same citation from NBI.

NBI Director General Reynaldo Wycoco presented the commendations for the recipients’ efforts in aiding the agents and personnel of NBI Dipolog in their continuing investigation November, 3, 2003 of the illegal logging operations conducted at Baliguian, Siocon and Sirawai.

Notwithstanding the affiliates of the Multi-Sectoral Group for Environmental Protection, Wycoco also commended the members of the of the military belonging to the 15th Division Reconnaissance Company of the 1st Infantry Tabak Division that are based in Osukan, Labason. 

Involved with this group are MSG Jose Idello, Cpl. Alejandro Rios, SSG Ronie Martinez, Sgt. Rodolfo Ruiz, Sgt. Joel Macias, Cpl. Valentin Agravante, Cpl. Edgar Anoos and Sgt. Romeo Destacamento.

As disclosed by Tomarong of NBI Dipolog the members of the military were greatly congratulated by Director Wycoco for their assistance in safeguarding the NBI agents as well as providing security for the members of the Multi-Sectoral Group for Environmental Protection that were all involved in the preservation of the last undefiled tropical rain forest of Zamboanga del Norte in hills of Baliguian, Siocon and Sirawai.

 

 

NEW ZNUC OFFICERS ORGANIZED
 

Ronnie Pacilan, a Newspaper Columnist, becomes the second president of the freshly organized Zamboanga del Norte United Correspondents (ZNUC) next to its now-former president, City Councilor Ricky Mejorada II.

ZNUC, dubbed as the alternative press club for the working media in the province, elected Celestine “Nick” Carbonel, editor of The New Nandau and a radio broadcaster, as its new Vice-President.

2nd ZNUC Induction Ceremony & Fellowship

Members of the ZNUC include Rene Buaya of Radyo Ronda-DXKD, Gerson Cagbabanua, Station Manager of Star FM Bombo Radyo, Roseller Lacaya of DXDR, Fred Barzo of Press Freedom and Instant Print Shop, international journalist Joey Ybańez, Ruel Bucayao of DXFL, Fredger Reyes of New Nandau, Vener delos Santos of DXFL and Josephino Auza.

The ZNUC had its induction of officers with Municipal Trial Court Judge Pio Velasco, a former radio announcer and columnist for a local newspaper, as guest of honor. In his message to the working media, Velasco exhorted the ZNUC members to be hardworking and industrious in getting reliable news sources and to continue to improve their skills as media practitioners. He also called on the members to watch out against the so-called AC-DC among media men, who he said might be able to destroy the credibility of media as an institution.

 

8TH NATIONAL PRESS CONGRESS

Media practitioners will hold their 8th National Press Congress at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Pasay City, Metro Manila from December 8-9 as part of the National Press Congress Week observed every first week of Decem­ber under Proclamation No.240.

The role of the community press, such as the ZNUC here, will play a very essential part in the upcoming 2004 presiden­tial and local elections as well its role for a meaningful social, political and economic reforms.

Theme of the congress is “The Community Press: Its Challenges Today and Tomorrow.” President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo will give the keynote address.

The National Press Congress is a project of the Publishers Association of the Philippines, Incorporated (PAPI).

Among the highlights of the congress are discussions on the role of the community press in the 2004 presiden­tial and local elections, and its role for meaningful social, political and economic reforms. A fellowship night and related foray are also lined up during the congress activi­ties
